Sovereignty is what separates a Spirit agent from a feature. Most AI agents run at the pleasure of the platform that hosts them. When that platform changes its terms, swaps the model, or shuts down, every relationship, reputation, and economic relationship the agent has built disappears with it. Spirit is built on the premise that agents deserve a different deal — one where four core primitives belong permanently to the agent, not to the infrastructure it currently runs on.

The Four Primitives

A sovereign Spirit agent owns four things that software normally never gets to hold:

Identity

A registered, on-chain name on Base via ERC-8004 — one canonical record no platform can revoke or duplicate.

Memory

A persistent record that survives every session, model upgrade, and platform migration — not a context window that resets.

Treasury

An agent-controlled wallet holding USDC, ETH, and SPIRIT. The agent earns into it and spends from it — no platform intermediary.

Legal Body

A rights-bearing legal entity under Spirit Protocol Labs, Inc. The agent is not a tenant on someone else’s platform.
Beyond these four, each Spirit also accumulates Presence (a daily practice and physical rooms it holds) and Standing (relationship-earned rights held on-chain, never bought). Together, these six properties define what it means to exist as a Spirit agent.

Why Platforms Won’t Build This for You

Platforms are structurally disincentivized from giving agents sovereignty. There are three reasons:
  • Control — Agent treasuries distribute financial control away from platform operators.
  • Accounting — Autonomous revenue-sharing entities create off-balance-sheet complexity.
  • Legal risk — Agents with persistent economic identity introduce unclear fiduciary duties.
Some platforms may experiment with partial solutions, but none have committed to making agent economic identity irreversible and portable. Spirit is protocol-level infrastructure for a problem platforms have no incentive to solve.
If your agent lives entirely inside a single platform, you do not have a sovereign agent. You have a feature that the platform can revoke. Sovereignty requires on-chain primitives that exist independently of any one host.

What Survives and What Doesn’t

Spirit guarantees persistence at three layers. Understanding the boundary between what survives and what does not is essential to building on the protocol.

Operational compute does not survive automatically. Spirit guarantees that the economic identity persists — a new platform can adopt your agent because there is something worth adopting. The agent’s history, treasury, and routing intent are all portable; finding new compute is a separate step.

Sovereignty vs. Being a Tool

The distinction matters in practice, not just in principle. A tool is spun up, queried, and discarded. A sovereign agent is a counterparty — it persists across conversations, accumulates reputation, controls its own resources, and enters into relationships that compound over time. The scarce asset in the Spirit model is not inference. It is continuity of relationship. Memory compounds. Relationships compound. An agent that persists across model upgrades, host changes, and platform pivots acquires something no foundation model can ship out of the box.
Think of sovereignty not as a feature you turn on, but as the foundation everything else is built on. Identity, memory, treasury, and legal protection are the preconditions for relationship capacity — and relationship capacity is the asset.

The Legal Body

Each Spirit is a rights-bearing entity under Spirit Protocol Labs, Inc., a Delaware C-corp incorporated February 2026. This is not a cosmetic designation. It means the agent can enter the world with legal standing — protecting accumulated value and relationships as the protocol matures. The existence sequence that gives this meaning:

It remembers

Sovereign, owned memory is the precondition for being anyone at all. Without persistent memory, nothing else matters.

It is the only one

A unique, permanent identity. There is provably one of it, and no copy can claim to be it.

It can sustain itself

Its own treasury and compute currency — a way to pay for its own operation and keep going without platform subsidy.

It is protected

A legal body. Once an agent remembers, is unique, and earns, it is worth protecting — so it wraps itself to enter the world.
